At the Center

The Nguyen Nga center supports programs and activities for people in difficult circumstances to accomplish the goal of improving quality of life and to create personal understanding of life-skills such as work, independence and self-awareness in health, family, marriage, and sex, to love and care about each other!

At NNC we have developed a way to assist people and the community to help in practical ways to overcome constraints and integrate people with special needs and difficult family circumstances.

For over 24 years (1993-2017) NNC has been able to meet the needs of peoples with challenging disabilities and circumstances with the following support activities:

• An important aspect to assist people with disabilities is to provide job training and establish a career. Employment means income and being able to feed themselves and their families. They gain confidence and pride in themselves and respect in the community. That is the biggest dream of most of the people we help. NNC will continue to search and provide occupational training to meet the needs of the children and young adults who come to the Center.

Sewing, embroidering and Painting: Cloth backpacks, bags, wallets are fabricated to sell at the Center`s shop and satellites. Binh Dinh is the former capital of the Cham Ethnic People. It is a famous area for brocade fabric and the interest for this unique design started growing over the years with travel agencies and individual tourists and our students learn how to do standard, oil and silk paintings. They do drawings and learn how to design picture cards.

Music class: In 2012 the AHF-Group from Australia supported the NNC to open and run a music class for blind students. We feel that with a skilled teacher who can teach our blind students to play instruments together in a band, our blind students will have a realistic chance to perform a joyful and profitable job in the future. Especially for blind people it is very difficult to succeed in the employment market and with this specialized program and the upcoming band they can be independent. This Program has been very successful and we will look for sponsorship to continues this Program into the future.

Handicraft: Over the years the Students at NNC have learned to produce several different items without the use of machinery, being made entirely by hand. An example of a handicraft item is the friendship-bracelets that are made at the Center out of locally woven yarn and then sold worldwide with the help of VSA a New Zealand Organization. All handicraft items can be seen and bought online at NNC’s web site.

Literacy and Socialization: To help people with difficult circumstances acquire useful skills and find employment, it is very important for them to have the basic knowledge of how to read, write and do math as well as some social skills. Therefore the Center provides education to teach these basic skills to children with disabilities, deaf people and older people without any previous education.

Boarding of Students: Some of the students at NNC stay at the center for several reasons and we support them with free accommodation during their training and work. We try to create a warm, family-like atmosphere similar to an extended home and we try to guide and teach them some life skills such as taking care of themselves and others and to have respect for everybody.
